Finally, Pieces of Fabric and a Portrait, #3

Today is my Birthday. This portrait represents how I feel going into this new year. I've been working on this portrait in my mind for many, many months and finally finished it this morning.

Inspired by a feeling about how I feel today. Finally is the word that comes to mind. Finally can mean so many things. Finally arrived. Finally know. Finally peace. Finally ready.

Finally see.

Finally be.

Keep reading below. I share how I created this portrait.

I created this image using 6 different pictures I've taken over the past few years. I also spent about 10 hours in Photoshop editing and painting and just letting inspiration lead the way.

This is part of my personal project Pieces of Fabric and a Portrait. The idea...I make a dress or outfit using one piece or a few pieces of fabric, no sewing, just wrapping, tying and pinning the fabrics and then create beautiful inspired portraits.

For this portrait, I started with a giant piece of bright pink fabric, wrapped it around myself to create a "dress". I pinned it with the clips you see below. I used the wax paper and freezer paper pictured to create the look of chrysalis fading away at my feet. (I looked up the word cocoon and apparently that's not usually what caterpillars form to become butterflies, it's called a chrysalis. Learned something new.)

I took quite a few portraits of myself wearing the "dress" in front of a gray background and merged two different images together so I had a complete image without the camera remote in my hand.

I took this image of a beautiful butterfly during a family vacation in Florida years ago. It's one of my favorite photographs. I am in love with the wings and made them my wings in this portrait.

This next image was taken during a walk through the mountains in Georgia with my sister a few years ago.  We were both in awe of the light streaming through the trees over the creek. You will see in the final image, I used this picture for the background.

This following photo shows reflections in the pond at my Grandma's cabin in the Georgia mountains. I used the sky and tree reflections as part of the final portrait, to create additional light and glow.

I took the next photo on the same nature walk through the mountains in Georgia with my sister. This is an image looking straight down at the creek, slow shutter speed for movement. I used this to add texture to the chrysalis...cocoon :-), I just like how cocoon sounds.

And again...the final portrait...

Fabric, Flowers and a beautiful Bride to Be, Portrait Photographer

I have been dreaming about a project for a long time and am excited to finally share the start of it. The idea: photograph women where they are in life right now. What they're working on, what they're going through, what they're facing or celebrating are all used for inspiration. I use that inspiration to create a vision for the photo shoot. Then I head out to shop for the perfect fabrics that will become the complete wardrobe and backdrop. For this photo shoot, I worked with Hannah. Hannah is a Bride to Be and is currently planning her own wedding. She also works as a wedding planner. There will be another post soon featuring some really cool business portraits of Hannah for her company Day of Gal. To make this photo shoot complete we had the lovely Jamie Hoover for hair and makeup.

And here we go...

The dress Hannah is wearing above I created from the fabrics below. Just creatively wrapped and clipped them on using my background clips. When I saw the beautiful mauve flowery fabric I immediately thought "HANNAH!".

And then I made a trip to the local grocery and bought a few bouquets of fresh flowers and just picked the ones I liked best for our photo shoot and made a bridal bouquet.

After layering and clipping a few more of the fabrics on...look at the result...

It's exactly how I imagined...creating the look and feel through the simplicity of pieces of fabric, a few clips and some great light. I think it is so neat that she is not wearing an actual wedding dress but who would know. Well you know now because I told you.

These bridal portraits are also an example of what I'd like to do with brides who'd like a do-over for their portraits. You deserve to get back in your gown and get the portraits you dreamt about. I don't photograph weddings but I do take bridal portraits.

Happy Love Day to you all!

Perspective! What's yours?

Happy Friday! I wanted to share this photo I took when I was on a tough hike and came across this beautiful lake...be sure to keep reading after the photo...

The Truth: I was actually on the jetty at Dockweiler Beach, CA and I put my camera near ground level to take the photo and that's a puddle about a foot across, the rocks are about a foot tall.

Can you change your perspective on something that seems huge and it's really just a little ol' thing? Or maybe you have something big to be celebrating and you're minimalizing it? See what happens if you change your perspective.

Have a great weekend!
